A Tribute to Eric Hoberg

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Eric Hoberg, our Board Treasurer.

Eric will be dearly missed by all of us at the San Francisco Foster Youth Fund. He lived an amazing and admirable life of service and he gave so much of himself as a professional and an individual to improving the lives of foster children.

Eric served the San Francisco Human Service Agency (HSA) for over 50 years.  He started in 1969 as an eligibility worker in the area of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) and then moved on to the General Assistance (GA) department.  During this time, Eric witnessed first-hand the rise of street homelessness in SF, and in 1983, he transferred to the agency’s first homeless division.  In the days before shelters, Eric helped many desperate families find housing.  Eric saw the agency through many of its hardest times, including the AIDS epidemic when 10% of HSA staff died of AIDS.  Eric knew every person whose name is on the AIDS quilt hung on the walls of the HSA in San Francisco.  Some of those lost were his dearest friends.

Eric’s first love was working with children and he eventually moved to Family and Children’s Services where he served the rest of his professional career.

After Eric retired, his love for working with children lived on and he chose to donate his personal time to our SF Foster Youth Fund.  Eric was the heart of our fund, volunteering thousands of hours of his personal time to support our activities and to personally mentor our scholarship kids.  Eric would advocate for our youth at every opportunity.  At a recent celebration of Eric’s 50 years of service to HSA, a former scholarship kid from our Fund’s program described how a simple note that Eric had written to her had convinced her to stay in college — securing her life’s direction and ultimate success as an independent adult.

Respectfulness and kindness defined Eric Hoberg. He will be remembered for his patience and optimism, his wry sense of humor, and his unwavering commitment to our children.

Eric’s spirit lives on in our Fund and we will carry him in our heart always.

It is the belief of the San Francisco Foster Youth Fund that no child should be deprived of essential life experiences and enriching activities.

These youth are high school graduates who strive to continue their studies. The scholarships provide modest financial assistance intended to supplement the student’s other funding. They help with any uncovered expenses, including those small extras which they may not otherwise by able to afford, such as books, clothing, or participation in extracurricular activities

SFFYF hosts several annual fundraising events that have become a familiar part of the landscape in San Francisco’s social services network.

Join us for the Mae Louise Mays Charity Softball Tournament on June 15, 2019.

Despite the economic challenges faced by Americans in recent years, SFFYF donors have continued to help the Fund remain financially stable. Although many non-profits face the prospect of cutting services due to financial shortfalls, our donor network of private individuals, San Francisco city employees and others have generously supported the children served by SFFYF.

I was a very lucky and blessed person indeed to have been able to be a recipient of your organization.
Gabrielle, SFFYF scholarship recipient
Thank you for all you have done for me. I am truly grateful to God for sending someone like you in my life. All the help and support really helped and now I am finished with school. I love you from the bottom of my heart.
Alice J., SFFYF scholarship student who had just graduated
Just writing this thank you card to let you guys know how much I appreciate the check for my cheerleading uniform. Thank you.
Your support and encouragement has greatly helped me on my educational path. I am grateful for this much needed opportunity because as we all know it is very difficult for former foster youth to graduate without help. I plan to graduate next year with 2 associate degrees in music and general education. I then plan to study abroad and earn a Masters of Fine Arts. Thank you again for your support.
S.G., SFFYF scholarship recipient
Thank you for helping me with the prom. I had a great night!
I wanted to thank you very very much for the shoes. Literally I cried when receiving the shoes because I was so happy! I know it sounds cheesy that a person would cry for shoes but I did. I’m so thankful that someone thought about my comfort and safety. I really can’t express how grateful I am with words.
Cassandra, Loves sports and needed new athletic shoes
Thank you for this wonderful scholarship because it makes it possible for me to attend college. One thing I learned in college is that every penny counts!
Vitaliy, Freshman at UC Santa Cruz
First, I got to take karate class, and now I’m taking trumpet lessons. It’s fun and I hope I can keep playing.
